The Golden Globes 2014- Fashion Review

This year's Golden Globes were probably my favorite in recent history. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were the perfect hosts- funny, sharp, and engaging- and the winners were for some reason all perfectly flabbergasted that they won. There were a few surprises and a few drunken rambles (here's looking at you, Cate Blanchett,) but nothing too crazy. Well, except for Jacqueline Bisset. That lady was some kind of crazy.
So, here's my annual fashion review- the beautiful, the ugly, and the straight up WTF.

Let's start with the best, shall we?

The Best Dressed at the 2014 Golden Globes (According to Me)

My all time favorite of the evening was Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama winner Cate Blanchett, who oozed glamour, style, and sex appeal in this beautiful black lace gown. The actress looked positively stunning, and I"m sure this will be the first of many awards she wins this season.

My second-favorite look of the night was Olivia Wilde, who made pregnancy look oh-so-sexy in this gorgeous emerald green sparkler. She got extra points for her equally sexy hair and sharp, catlike eyes.

JLaw does love her some fitted gowns with voluminous bottoms (see: every dress she wore last year,) and this one might be my favorite of the ones she's worn. She accepted her second consecutive Best Supporting Actress award in classic, simple style. If I could have changed anything, it would have been her garish lipstick, but overall, not bad.

This is normally an example of a dress I wouldn't care for, but Elisabeth Moss (who walked away with a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Mini Series or TV Movie,) worked it like a charm. It's edgy, it's sexy, and it's chic- just like the woman herself.

Naomi Watts has had a rough year. Her portrayal of Princess Diana in 'Diana' was widely mocked and reviled, even by the most forgiving of critics, so she wasn't going to receive any awards this year. However, she looked like a billion bucks in this glistening champagne gown, so maybe 2014 will hold better news for the actress.

Amy Adams, the perennial 'always a bridesmaid, never a bride' has been nominated for more awards than I could count, but until last night, never won a thing. Her luck changed with she accepted her first Golden Globe for her portrayal of sexy, scheming Sydney Prosser in "American Hustle," and boy, did she look the part. Hot damn.

Anybody who knows me knows that Taylor Swift is my style icon, and while this wasn't my favorite gown she's ever worn, it's definitely lovely. Red was a hot color on the red carpet this year, and TSwift's was probably my favorite red gown of the night.

Kate Beckinsale could wear a potato sack covered in garbage and she'd still look like the most beautiful woman of all time, and this gorgeous, sparkling, slinky silver number just reminds us why.

Robin Wright took home her first Golden Globe for "Best Actress in a TV Series- Drama" in a shimmery nude gown that put women half her age to shame.

Newcomer Margot Robbie made her first Golden Globes appearance to support "The Wolf of Wall Street" in a cream colored gown with a slit up to there and confidence for miles. I'm sure this is not the last we'll be hearing from her.

Last but not least, beautiful Kerry Washington proudly and lovingly showed off her baby bump in an off-white column gown. This is normally not a dress I would pick, but Kerry's style is so definitive and so quirky, and of course she looks so beautiful and glowy, that her whole look is elevated.

Now, onto the Good Stuff...

The Bad-But-Not-So-Bad-As-to-Fall-Into-the-WTF-Category:

Drew Barrymore is by far the least offensive offender on this list, but only because she's made quite a career for herself dressing just like this. The actress rarely conforms to fashion rules and favors quirky pieces in bright colors, and now, pregnant with her second baby girl, she gave into that love and dressed in a comfy (if juvenile) dress. She looks lovely, if a bit like a Valentine.

I'm giving this one the "Good Try" award, because this dress would have been lovely on anyone else but Mila Kunis. Mila is one of the most beautiful women on the planet, and she repeatedly knocks my socks off on the red carpet, but this gray option seems so dull and matronly on her that it reads more 'mother of the bride' than gorgeous fashionista.

No one could ever accuse the cast of "Girls" of being stylish, but Zosia Mamet and Lena Dunham (Shoshanna and Hannah, respectively) are repeatedly placed on the 'meh' list after each award show. Lena, for her part, usually favors odd cuts and weird colors, but today seems like she tried to do All the Right Things: Odd pose? Check. Gaudy color? Check. Weird crunchy fabric? Check. Halfhearted overall execution? Check. (Even Dunham admitted 'this wasn't really her.') As for Zosia, this is about as dull as you can get. Snore.

Melissa Rauch went all the wrong ways with this garish yellow dress. That the Big Bang Theory star has a bangin' body is no doubt; the problem is that this terrible cut and obnoxious color does nothing for her. The yellow is the same shade as her hair (which makes her skin look pale and lifeless,) the rouching hits her in all the wrong places (making the already petite star look tiny and dumpy,) and the drooping straps do nothing for her amazing cleavage. This is definitely the biggest disappointment of the night.

There are a lot of things about Zooey Deschanel I really like; I like her stylish dark hair and bright eyes, I love her retro makeup, and I love her full committment to quirky, feminine style. However, there's always something that I find uncomfortable about her clothes- they're always dainty and almost creepily childish. This dress, for example, is lovely, but seems distinctively designed to look very young, almost like a doll. It just sits wrong with me. *shudders*

Alright, here's the fun Stuff... the WTF Section:

Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting is the most fashion-challenged person I've evert seen in Hollywood, but this dirty-looking, faux artsy mess pretty much takes the cake. The dirty, faux artsy cake.

Rashida Jones... are those palm trees? If so.... why? Why palm trees? I thought this was the Golden Globe awards, not the MTV Beach Party.

Dear Sandra Bullock: America loves you. I love you. You are the most likable, loveable, gorgeous person in Hollywood right now. However, Sandy, you look like a baby shower. Also, you are 50. Thank you for your time.

Color blocking was a big thing this year, and it's not my favorite trend of all time, but Aubrey Plaza's sloppy purple mess of a dress was my least favorite example of it.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler can host an award show; that is obvious. They were a laugh riot last night. But Amy's dull black dress and Tina's odd gown with pink... roses? Flamingos? on it just didn't do the trick. Thankfully they changed into more stylish gowns for the awards ceremony.

OH MY GOD PAULA PATTON RUN THERE"S A HUGE WHIPPED CREAM SNAKE TRYING TO EAT YOUR oh wait that's just your dress.

Heidi Klum, 2003 called, and even it doesn't want any of this garbage back.

The biggest fashion discussion this morning is about Julia Roberts' dress, which is menswhere chic meets office business luncheon. I vaguely like it.... but I also don't. Discuss.
